Paul Sarrut WWI Pencil Sketches
![]() |
We currently have a small collection of works on paper by WWI official artist Paul Sarrut. The job of official war artist at this period was an important one as photography was still in it's infancy and the only source of fast accurate images from the front line was from the artists actually there. |

Sarrut captures brilliantly the immediacy of the soldiers and there is a certain haunting poignancy to them. This image shows a group of Sikh soldiers. He uses either pencil or ink and all were made at the front sometimes on found paper rather than sketch paper. |

The works are all mostly A4 size or smaller and range in price from $395 to $695. They are floated in simple oak box frames. Each one is signed and dated and some have an inscription as to the regiment. The dates tend to be 1916-1917-1918.
