A fine Chinese ivory puzzle ball c1900. These extraordinary objects were made as a virtuoso display of carving technique and the ball section is made out of one solid piece of ivory with free moving layers inside. This one has six levels with dragons carved on the outside. There is a smaller ball included in the stand and the whole thing unscrews into four pieces.

Somethings never change, in the eighteenth century it was cheaper to have ones family dinner service made in China and painted there with the crest than to get a local manufacturer to do it. Again by the nineteenth century European companies could compete and the trade in Chinese made armorial ware ceased.

A superb Chinese Qianlong period copper enamelled dish c1750. The enamelling on this piece is absolutely wonderful; yellow ground with pink and blue dragons, a border of tiny pink bats and a rim of blue dragons. Most likely used, with a liner, for miniature trees which the Chinese were as found of as the Japanese.

A Chinese export "Nankin" blue & white covered milk jug with exquisite underglaze blue decoration and gilding c1780. In perfect condition. The term "Nankin" at the time refered to the port the goods were shipped from and was used generically for all blue and white export wares from this period. By 1800 the trade in Chinese export blue & white had ceased as European manufactures dominated the market with their own versions.

A Chinese rose water dropper made for the Middle eastern market c1750. Rosewater was sprinkled on most meat dishes in the Near East, and as a perfume. The Chinese made these items solely for export to that region and they were "shipped" via the Silk Route. This one is beautifully decorated with blue and white Islamic motifs.
