BRONZES CLOCKS & FIGURES

A terracotta bust of Mars by Roucourt dated 1786. A fabulous large sized work in great condition.

A French red japanned and gilt chinoiserie bracket clock c1860. The fashion for the Louis XVIth style started around this time in France and this beautiful clock covers two bases by being in that style but also decorated in the chinoiserie manner. Charming figures decorate the base with floral garlands - which are much more Louis LVIth than Chinese! - around the remainder of the case. In good working order.

"Madame Recamier" marble bust after Chinard c1880. Chinard was a highly celebrated French sculptor who managed to find patronage both before and after the revolution. His Neo Classical style was particularly popular with the Bonaparte family. Madam Recamier married a wealthy banker and was a very fashionable hostess during the Empire.

A French Vernis Martin cartel clock c1780. Vernis Martin is a lacquer technique developed by French brothers Guillaume and Etienne-Simon Martin in immitation of Chinese lacquer and used on furniture, clocks and decorative objects. This is a fabulous example.

An Elephant Clock in bronze and enamel c1880. This style of clock was first fashionable during the reign of Louis XVIth and is a hybrid Chinoiserie style. Ironically the Chinese then became enamoured of European clocks and there are still French Chinoiserie clocks in the Forbidden City collection.

Blowing Bubbles, a French patinated bronze & glass figure by Antoine Bofil. This charming figure shows a Japanese lady blowing bubbles. The fashion for Japanese works took off in Paris in the 1870's and influenced the decorative arts there for the rest of the century.

Cymbal Dancer, an Art Deco bronze, enamelled & ivory figure by Gerdago, Austrian c1930. A beautiful and highly stylized example of Gerdago's work on its original stone plinth. Signed to the hem of a trouser.

The Dancers, a bronze by Amedeo Genarelli, Italian c1925. This superb and large piece is a sensational example of the period. High Deco, it has a beautiful patina and can be viewed from both sides. The scale and quality of the piece leads you to imagine it gracing the saloon of The Queen Mary at least!

"Sabine Women" alabaster after Giambologna c1720. This superb group is typical of the type of works aquired by gentleman travels on The Grand Tour.

French gilt bronze "Castanets" by J.M.Valentin c1900. A charming figure in superb condition, signed to the base.
