Aesthetic Movement lantern Aesthetic Movement lantern

A beautiful quality Aesthetic Movement converted gas lantern c1880. You can clearly see the influence of Japanese design on the Aesthetic Movement in the glass panels of this piece. The lantern is made up of panels of stained glass, some of which are finely hand painted, in a brass framework. Now converted to electricity one side is hinged to open where the gas would have been lit. In perfect condition, rewired for use in Australia and ready to hang.

The most sensational pair of Jpanese Meiji period bronze vases ormolu mounted in France as lamps. The bronzes are c1870 the mounting c1900. (They would have been mounted as oil lamps originally.) The quality of the bronze work is superb and show a mythological story whilst the ormolu mounting is very fine with acanthus scrolls tio the top. The pair now have bespoke cream sik pagoda shades.

An extremely rare pair of narwhal tusk lamps from the collection of the Queen's aunt Lady Elphinstone c1900. The narwhal Monodon monoceros is an artic whale with the strange characteristic of a single curly tusk growing from its skull. During the medieval period these tusks were thought to be from unicorns and were highly prized. An eighteenth century gentleman's study would not be complete without a narwhal tusk and Yves Saint Laurent had a pair which sold in the sale of his collection at Christies in Paris. The tusks are mounted on ebonized plinths with silvered bronze lions paw feet and rams head light fittings.

A superb Art Deco patinated wrought iron uplight with its original shade signed Muller Fréres Luneville c1930. It is rare to find such a piece with the original glass bowl intact. The Muller nine brothers and one sister set up their own workshop in 1895 after the eldest two had trained with Gallé. The Mullers constantly experimented with decorative techniques. Expert carvers, they would use the wheel to obtain the subtlest effects. The company ceased production of decorative glass in 1914 at the outbreak of the first World War, but continued making commercial lightfittings until 1933.

A fine and rare eight branch bronze Argand chandelier c1820. We have never seen an eight branch Argand before and the quality of this is sensational. The casting of the base with its masks and acanthus leaves is superb, as is the thick linked chain. The piece also has its original reservoir which adds to the impact of this very sculptural chandelier. The Argand lamp quickly displaced all other varieties of oil lamps and was manufactured in a great variety of decorative forms. They were more costly than the primitive oil lamps of former times because of their increased complexity.
