English Sterling Silver Chinoiserie Tray A superb and rare English sterling silver tray decorated with repoussé Chinoiserie figures and pagodas. Dated London 1748 by the maker William Peaston. Silver objects were still the domain of the wealthy, it wasn't until the later 19th century that silver objects became much more affordable. Chinoiserie decoration on silver is quite rare as the fashion at this time for silver objects was overwhelmingly roccoco. |

Ottoman Period Purple Velvet Cover A sensational 19th century Ottoman silk velvet cover with gold thread petit point embroidery. The colour of this piece is delicious, a muted eggplant purple with very fine quality embroidery. Perhaps as beautiful, in a different way, is the back which is a beautiful hand loomed glazed cotton. Such pieces were intended for use at ceremonial occasions and would often be used to wrap gifts at weddings or cover a table used as part of a ceremony. In very good condition throughout. |

A Dodecanese Silk Embroidered Cloth An extraordinarily beautiful 18th century silk embroidered handloomed linen cloth. The islands centered around Rhodes had a specific style of embroidery - who knew! - and this is a fabulous example. The stitch is almost a crochet and is in the most beautiful reds and blues and of very fine quality. The linen base is handloomed and a patchwork of smaller pieces. There are two old repairs but generally the condition is very good. Such pieces are extremely rare. |

Early Byzantine period doll An early Byzantine period bone doll 4th cent. This extraordinary object is the body of a childs doll made from animal bone. You can clearly see the holes for articulated arms and for earrings. She has very clearly carved hair and face features. There is a surface crack - similar to that found in aged ivory - and a section has been reglued lower left othewise in good, stable condition. Interestingly, in many parts of Africa, childrens dolls are still made from animal bone. |
