A Bronze Electrolier

A superb bronze electrolier with four branched globes and its original frosted glass shades c1890. The piece features griffin head and acanthus leaf decoration. It has been rewired for use in Australia and is ready to install.

The piece hangs 92 cm.

Robert Hammond, in December 1881, demonstrated the new electric light in the Sussex town of Brighton in the UK for a trial period. The ensuing success of this installation enabled Hammond to put this venture on both a commercial and legal footing, as a number of shop owners wanted to use the new electric light. Thus the Hammond Electricity Supply Co. was launched.  Supply was provided on a twenty four basis in 1887.

The term "electrolier" was created from the modern prefix "electro" added to the old word "chandelier".
