A Dodecanese Silk Embroidered Cloth
An extraordinarily beautiful 18th century silk embroidered handloomed linen cloth. The islands centered around Rhodes had a specific style of embroidery - who knew! - and this is a fabulous example. The stitch is almost a crochet and is in the most beautiful reds and blues and of very fine quality. The linen base is handloomed and a patchwork of smaller pieces. There are two old repairs but generally the condition is very good. Such pieces are extremely rare. For a very similar example see the final thumbnail, an illustration from Pauline Johnstone's "A Guide to Greek Island Embroidery" click here for a link to the book.
