Archangel carved ivory box
A rare Russian Archangel carved walrus ivory jewellry box c1850. The centre for this was type of work was the town of Kholmogory, up the river from Archangel port, where the hunted walruses were landed. Such boxes were commonly given as wedding presents and could take the form of tea caddies, jewel caskets or glove boxes etc. This one has very finely fretted panels of walrus ivory vennered onto a pine base which is constructed with pegs rather than nails. It has elegant bracket feet and an ivory knob. It is in good condition with some minor losses to the fret work and one foot has been replaced with a solid carved bone one quite some time ago.
