Calamander wood writing box
A superb quality calamander and gilt mounted writing slope c1860. The box is marked "Wheeler Weymouth". Mahogany interiors with original purple velevt writing slop and gilt Gothic style decoration to the top in the Pugin manner. Calamander is a rare wood from Ceylon and India used in British furniture from the Regency period following the rise of Empire and availability of rarer materials from colonial outposts. In excellent condition with two original glass ink bottles.
