Chinese Export Lacquer Fan

A beautiful Chinese export lacquer, gilt and painted fan c1830. This piece is in wonderful condition as it has probably been under cover since it was bought. Known as a "Fan of a Thousand Faces" each face is actually a sliver of painted ivory and each costume made of woven silk. The lacquer sticks are decorated with a scene of people in a pleasure garden and the whole thing is in perfect condition. It is framed in a later black jappaned box which has served to preserve it so well. Fans were still used and fashionable untill the First World War and were a popular gift for young women.
