Chiparus silvered bronze figure

"Ring Dancer" French Art Deco silvered bronze figure by Dimitri Chiparus c 1930.

Dimitri Chiparus was a sculptor, born in Romania in 1886, dying in 1947. In 1909, he decided to travel and studied in Florence before eventually moving to Paris in 1912, where he studied under Antoine Mercié and Jean Boucher. He exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1914. His later works in the 1920’s were influenced by the interest in Egypt at the excavation of the Pharoahs’ tombs. He based many works on the ballet and theatre, one particular theme being the Ballet Russe from which resulted the ‘Russian Dancers’ depicting Nijinsky and Ida Rubinstein. His work is considered some of the most attractive and desirable of Art Deco period small sculpture along with that Ferdinand Preiss and Claire Colinet.
