French 19th cent marble Venus
"Venus Entering her Bath" French mid 19th cent marble Venus after Christope-Gabriel Allegrain.
Christophe-Gabriel Allegrain was born in Paris in 1710, dying there in 1795. He was sculptor of allegorical & mythical subjects and figures. He was a son of Gabriel Allegrain and married Pigalle’s sister; some biographers state that he did much of the work signed by Pigalle. He was a professor and then director of the Académie de Peinture et de Sculpture. His most interesting works are a ‘Diana’, a ‘Narcissus’ and ‘Venus Entering her Bath’.
His work is represented in the collections of the Louvre and the Museum at Tournus.
