Geo III Period Mahogany Gainsborough Chair

A classic George III period English mahogany "Gainsborough" chair c1780. Of wonderful proportions the arms are delicately carved. Gainsborough Chairs are so named for their use in the paintings in the paintings of Thomas Gainsborough. The 18th-century artist often had subjects sit in this style chair in his famed portraits due to the flattering perspective it gave the sitter in the composition. In fact, it was one of the only chairs that would properly accommodate the volume of a typical 18th-century woman's skirt.

Dimensions: 67 cm wide x 64 cm deep x 95 cm tall

With it is a curious mahogany ships tripod table with a brass gallery and inset disc engraved with "From the Wreck of the Amazon" c1880. There are several wrecked Amazon's from this period, the most notable being HMS Amazon in 1866. The table would most probably have been salvage, rather than made from timbers of the wreck as is sometimes the case. $3485 inc GST SOLD
