Marie Tuck was born in 1872 at Mount Torrens, South Australia. She studied with James Ashton and later in Paris with Rupert Bunny. She taught in Perth between 1896 and 1904, afterwards returning to Paris where her ‘Toilet of the Bride’ received an Honourable Mention at the Paris Salon. In 1908, she sent ‘The Fish Market’ to an exhibition in Australia where it was bought by the Art Gallery of South Australia. While living in France, she painted at Etaples during the summer months and completed a series of religious paintings for Rheims Cathedral. She returned to Australia in 1914, at the outbreak of World War I and became well-known in South Australia as a teacher.
Her work is represented in the collections of the Art Gallery of New South Wales and the Art Gallery of Western Australia.
