KPM Porcelain plaque c1880

KPM Porcelain plaque of “Angelic Kauffman dressed as a Vestal” c1880, (165 x 125) in perfect condition.

The Royal Porcelain Manufactory: Königliche Porzellanmanufaktur, at Berlin was the principal, and one the finest producers of porcelain plaques, in the second half of the 19th century. Porcelain plaques are more difficult to work on than oil paintings: the ceramic paints do not attain their final colour until they are fired at the correct temperature. Many ceramic colours have to be fired at different temperatures and will ‘fire-out’ (discolour and hence be useless) if heated above that temperature. It is therefore necessary to apply and then fire the high temperature colours first, and then work down in two, three, four or more stages applying colours that need to be fired at progressively lower temperatures.
