Eugène
de Barbériis was born in Marseilles in 1851,
dying in Sanary in 1937. He was a painter of military subjects, portraits,
genre scenes and landscapes. After studying at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Marseilles, he went
to Paristo study with Detaillle, Bougeureau, Tony
Robert-Fleury and Berne-Bellecour. As well as large battle scenes, he also
painted sentimental subjects with strong lighting effects, scenes of military
life, portraits and landscapes. He exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon
between 1878 and 1901.
His work is illustrated in the Dictionnaire des
Petits Maîtres de la Peinture.
His work is represented in the collections of the
museums at Ajaccio, Albi, Marseilles and Nimes.
