Moon Light on the Bay by James Ashton
“Moonlight on the Bay”, oil on board c1910 by James Ashton. James Ashton was born in 1859 on the Isle of Man, arriving in Adelaide in 1884. He studied at York School of Art with J Windass around 1878 and with the marine painter Henry Moore around 1895. He founded the Norwood Art School, Adelaide in 1885, and is recorded as having founded art galleries in five South Australian towns as well as the Academy of Arts, Adelaide. A fine painter of seascapes, his style was marginally influenced by impressionism. His work is represented in the collections of the Art Gallery of South Australia, Broken Hill and Bendigo.
