Pair Gillows chairs

A pair of Goncalo Alvez dining chairs attributed to Gillow of Lancaster & London c1830.

Gillow's furniture made in the London workshop was never stamped whereas the items made in the Lancaster workshop often were such as the dining table and sideboard featured un this section.

Goncalo Alvez is a Brazillian wood which gained favour during the Napoleonic wars as it was readily available from Neutral Portugese merchants. Gillow were promoters of this wood as a fine luxury cabinet making timber. We have a Goncalo Alvez writing table which may also be by Gillow and is of superb quality. The wood itself looks like the lovechild of mahogany and rosewood; the same rich colour as mahogany with the darker grain of rosewood.
