Sydney Long was a painter etcher and teacher born in Goulburn in 1871, dying in London in 1955. He studied at the Art Society of NSW School (later RAS School), with A J Daplyn, Frank Mahony and Julian Ashton between 1892 and 1896 and in London with Malcolm Osborne. From 1913, he began exhibiting regularly at the Royal Academy and began to practice etching. After 15 years in London, he returned to Sydney in 1925, to become a leading figure in the Australian art world, particularly in the field of etching. He was President of the NSW Society of Artists between 1899 and 1901, elected Associate of the Society of Painter Etchers in 1920.
His work is represented in the National Gallery of Australia, all State and many regional galleries.
