Charles d’Agar was born in 1669 in Paris, dying in London in 1723. The son of the painter Jacques d’Agar, the family moved to London as part of the Huguenot exodus in the 1680’s. He was apprenticed to Robert Robinson, later travelled to Copenhagen where he stayed six years, returning to London in 1691, where he enjoyed a successful portrait practice.
His work is represented in the collections at Ham House, the Victoria and Albert Museum, Lamport Hall, Burghley House and Drumlanrigg Castle.
