Portrait of Edith by Kalman Kemeny

A wonderful example of Kemeny's portraiture this "Portrait of Edith" is signed Kemeny and is c1940.

Kalman Kemeny was born in Hungary in 1896, dying in London in 1996. He attended the Academy of Fine Art in Budapest and supported himself throughout his studies by taking comissioned work. His was drafted into the Imperial Austrian Army in 1914 and on the recommendation of his professor in Budapest he was appointed an official war artist. After the first world war he moved to Vienna and continued his studies at the Academy of Fine Art there. Avoiding the Nazi threat he moved with his family to London where this work was completed and continued to exhibit at the Royal Academy and the New English Art Club among others. He also taught at the Hammersmith and Chelsea Schools of Art.
