Regency Penwork Box

A Regency period British pen work chinoiserie box c1820. Penwork was a form of decoration originally produced to mimic the expensive ivory inlaid Anglo-Indian items coming out of places like Vizagapatam in India. Amateurs did much penwork, which was considered a pleasant (and suitable!) persuit for ladies. The lid of the box is charmingly painted with very regency looking ladies in an exotic chinoiserie garden. The interior is lined in raspberry paper.
