Regency rosewood sofa

A fine regency period rosewood and boxwood inlaid "Grecian" sofa c1820. The inlaid roundels are of particularly good quality. The Greek revival style was sparked by the discovery of Herculaneum and Pompeii in the second quarter of the eighteenth century, interest in all things classical swept across Europe and was reflected in the decorative arts from furniture to porcelain, silver, painting even to clothing.
