David Teniers I, the Elder was born in 1582, in Antwerp, dying there in 1649. He was a painter and engraver of historical and religious subjects, mythological subjects, genre scenes, landscapes with figures. He studied with his brother Julian around 1594 and later under Lisebetten and finally, Rubens. He went to Italy and lived in Rome for six years, before returning to Antwerp and joining the painters’ Guild of St Luke.
His work is represented in all the major European galleries.
