Russian silver Torah pointer
A Russian silver Torah pointer dated 1892.
One does not touch the parchment of a Torah. The oils from our hands would damage the parchment and rub off the ink. The reader uses a pointer, called a yad, meaning "hand" to follow their place in the scroll.
