The Ostrich Fan oil by George Harcourt

"The Ostrich Fan" oil on canvas by George Harcourt, in its original gilt gesso frame, dated 1900.

George Harcourt was born in Dumbartonshire in 1868, dying in 1947. He was a Scottish painter of portraits and figurative subjects. He studied under Herkomer from 1889 and became his assistant. He exhibited at the Royal Academy and the Paris Salon, the Royal Society of British Artists and the Royal Scottish Academy between 1893 and 1946. He was awarded a Third Class Medal at the Paris Salon in 1896, and an Honourable Mention in 1900 at the Exposition Universelle, Paris and a Gold Medal at the Salon in 1923.

His work is illustrated in the Dictionary of Victorian Artists and the Dictionary of Portrait Painters in Britain.

His work is represented in the collections of the National Portrait Gallery, London, the Lady Lever Art Gallery, the Southampton City Art Gallery and the Art Gallery of New South Wales.
