Two Setters by George Armfield
“Two Setters”, oil on canvas dated 1865 by George Armfield. George Armfield worked between 1840 and 1875. He was a London painter of dogs, especially terriers chasing birds, cats or mice. He exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1840 and 1862, as well as at the British Institute and the Royal Society of British Artists, Suffolk Street. He also painted landscapes, game birds and other wild animals. He also worked under the name George Armfield Smith before 1840.
His work is represented in the collection of the Glasgow Art Gallery.
His work is illustrated in the Dictionary of Victorian Painters and Popular 19th Century Painting: A Dictionary of European Genre Painters.
