"Venus Italica" after Canova
"Venus Italica" Italian marble figure after Antonio Canova c1850.
‘Venus Italica’ was created in 1802 as the express wish of the Duke of Tuscany to
replace the ‘Medici Venus’ which had been looted from the Uffizzi by the
French.
Antonio Canova (1757–1822) was a
Venetian sculptor who became famous for his marble sculptures that delicately
rendered nude flesh. The epitome of the neoclassical style, his work marked a
return to classical refinement after the theatrical excesses of Baroque
sculpture. Amongst his notable works are the ‘Three Graces’, ‘Napoleon, as Mars
the Peacemaker’ a statue of George Washington, Pauline Borghese as ‘Venus
Victrix’ and ‘Cupid and Psyche’
