'The Fairy Coach'

Hand-painted porcelain panel c1890 signed Madeleine Lemaire. Lemaire was born in 1845 at Les Arcs, dying in Paris in 1928. She was a painter of genre, figures, nudes, still lifes, flowers and fruit and was a watercolourist. She was a pupil of her aunt, Madame Mathilde Herbelin, then Jules Chaplin. She exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1864 and was awarded an Honourable Mention in 1877 and a Silver Medal at the Exposition Universelle in 1900. She was made a Member of the Société Nationale des Beaux Arts in 1890. In 1906 she was made a Member of the Légion d'Honneur. She kept a Salon at the Rue de Monceau where many prominent artists, musicians and writers were to be found: "all those who the 'Belle Epoque' considered celebrities"; she inspired in part, the character of Madame Verdurin in Proust's A la Recherche du Temps Perdu. The framed work measures: 45cm x 34.5cm.
