“Lighting the Candle” a wonderful late 17th Century oil on canvas by a follower of Gottfried Schalken. A similar work, once attributed to Schalken, and possibly by the same hand as this painting, depicts an old woman in the background (instead of an old man as here), is now in the National Museum, Warsaw. Gottfried Schalken (1643-1706), was a pupil of Hoogstraten at Dordrecht and Gerard Dou in Leyden. He was a painter of portraits and small paintings, introducing effects of light, particularly with candlelight. Framed dimensions: 90cm wide x 107cm tall. The work has been professionally cleaned.
